Small business website guide

What a useful website
needs to do.

A polished design matters, but a business website also needs to explain the offer, support local discovery, earn trust, work well on phones, and give visitors a clear next step.

A practical checklist

Eight foundations worth checking.

Use these as decision points, not as a promise of rankings. Search visibility also depends on competition, reputation, links, Google Business Profile activity, and the usefulness of the information you publish.

  • A specific page title and description that explain the service and area
  • A clear main heading and useful service information written for customers
  • Dedicated service, about, and contact paths that are easy to find
  • Consistent business and service-area details across key pages
  • HTTPS, crawlable pages, a sitemap, canonical URLs, and valid structured data
  • Readable mobile layouts, efficient images, and tested loading performance
  • Real project information or customer proof when it is available
  • A plan for updates, maintenance, monitoring, and backups after launch

How to use the checklist

Start with clarity, then verify the technical work.

A website should first make sense to a potential customer. Technical checks then confirm that browsers and search engines can reach and understand it.

1. Read it like a customer.

Can someone quickly understand what you offer, where you work, what makes the business credible, and how to contact you? Fix missing or vague information before adding more pages.

2. Test observable evidence.

Check titles, descriptions, headings, links, image text alternatives, structured data, indexability, mobile layout, and PageSpeed results. Repeat performance tests because laboratory scores naturally vary.

3. Connect real business data.

Use Search Console, analytics, and Google Business Profile data to evaluate discovery and customer behavior. A website readiness score cannot replace those sources.
